There was a distinct native Italian style using black on a white background, which was no doubt cheaper than fully coloured work. The normal technique was opus tessellatum, using larger tesserae, which was laid on site. Often small panels called emblemata were inserted into walls or as the highlights of larger floor-mosaics in coarser work. The tiny tesserae allowed very fine detail, and an approach to the illusionism of painting. ![]() There were two main techniques in Greco-Roman mosaic: opus vermiculatum used tiny tesserae, typically cubes of 4 millimeters or less, and was produced in workshops in relatively small panels which were transported to the site glued to some temporary support. Splendid mosaic floors are found in Roman villas across North Africa, in places such as Carthage, and can still be seen in the extensive collection in Bardo Museum in Tunis, Tunisia. Most recorded names of Roman mosaic workers are Greek, suggesting they dominated high quality work across the empire no doubt most ordinary craftsmen were slaves. Greek figural mosaics could have been copied or adapted paintings, a far more prestigious artform, and the style was enthusiastically adopted by the Romans so that large floor mosaics enriched the floors of Hellenistic villas and Roman dwellings from Britain to Dura-Europos. Pliny the Elder mentions the artist Sosus of Pergamon by name, describing his mosaics of the food left on a floor after a feast and of a group of doves drinking from a bowl. Mythological subjects, or scenes of hunting or other pursuits of the wealthy, were popular as the centrepieces of a larger geometric design, with strongly emphasized borders. Many materials other than traditional stone, ceramic tesserae, enameled and stained glass may be employed, including shells, beads, charms, chains, gears, coins, and pieces of costume jewelry.īronze Age pebble mosaics have been found at Tiryns mosaics of the 4th century BC are found in the Macedonian palace-city of Aegae, and the 4th-century BC mosaic of The Beauty of Durrës discovered in Durrës, Albania in 1916, is an early figural example the Greek figural style was mostly formed in the 3rd century BC. Modern mosaics are made by artists and craftspeople around the world. Such mosaics went out of fashion in the Islamic world after the 8th century, except for geometrical patterns in techniques such as zellij, which remain popular in many areas. Roman and Byzantine influence led Jewish artists to decorate 5th and 6th century synagogues in the Middle East with floor mosaics.įigurative mosaic, but mostly without human figures, was widely used on religious buildings and palaces in early Islamic art, including Islam's first great religious building, the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, and the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus. Mosaic fell out of fashion in the Renaissance, though artists like Raphael continued to practice the old technique. Mosaic art flourished in the Byzantine Empire from the 6th to the 15th centuries that tradition was adopted by the Norman Kingdom of Sicily in the 12th century, by the eastern-influenced Republic of Venice, and among the Rus. Early Christian basilicas from the 4th century onwards were decorated with wall and ceiling mosaics. Pebble mosaics were made in Tiryns in Mycenean Greece mosaics with patterns and pictures became widespread in classical times, both in Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. Mosaics have a long history, starting in Mesopotamia in the 3rd millennium BC. Mosaic today includes not just murals and pavements, but also artwork, hobby crafts, and industrial and construction forms. It involves heating N-(2-carboxyphenyl)glycine to 200 ☌ (392 ☏) in an inert atmosphere with sodium hydroxide. An alternative and also viable route to indigo is credited to Heumann in 1897. Variations of this method are still in use today. This highly sensitive melt produces indoxyl, which is subsequently oxidized in air to form indigo. In this process, N-phenylglycine is treated with a molten mixture of sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, and sodamide. The first commercially practical route of producing indigo is credited to Pfleger in 1901. Johannes Pfleger and Karl Heumann eventually came up with industrial mass production synthesis. This route is highly useful for obtaining indigo and many of its derivatives on the laboratory scale, but proved impractical for industrial-scale synthesis. It involves an aldol condensation of o-nitrobenzaldehyde with acetone, followed by cyclization and oxidative dimerization to indigo. The Baeyer-Drewson indigo synthesis dates back to 1882. Given its economic importance, indigo has been prepared by many methods. Light exposure during part of the dyeing process can convert the dibromoindigo into indigo, resulting in blue hues known as royal blue, hyacinth purple, or tekhelet. Natural sources of indigo also include mollusks the Murex genus of sea snails produces a mixture of indigo and 6,6′-dibromoindigo (red), which together produce a range of purple hues known as Tyrian purple. The powder was then mixed with various other substances to produce different shades of blue and purple. They precipitate from the fermented leaf solution when mixed with a strong base such as lye, pressed into cakes, dried, and powdered. The leaves were soaked in water and fermented to convert the glycoside indican present in the plant to indigotin. Indican was obtained from the processing of the plant's leaves, which contain as much as 0.2–0.8% of this compound. Oxidation by exposure to air converts indoxyl to indigotin, the insoluble blue chemical that is the endpoint of indigo dye. Indican readily hydrolyzes to release β- D- glucose and indoxyl. The precursor to indigo is indican, a colorless, water-soluble derivative of the amino acid tryptophan. Several plants contain indigo, which, when exposed to an oxidising source such as atmospheric oxygen, reacts to produce indigo dye however, the relatively low concentrations of indigo in these plants make them difficult to work with, with the color more easily tainted by other dye substances also present in these plants, typically leading to a greenish tinge. ![]() In Europe, Isatis tinctoria, commonly known as woad, was used for dyeing fabrics blue, containing the same dyeing compounds as indigo, also referred to as indigo. In Central and South America, the species grown is Indigofera suffruticosa, also known as anil, and in India, an important species was Indigofera arrecta, Natal indigo. Until the introduction of Indigofera species from the south, Polygonum tinctorum (dyer's knotweed) was the most important blue dyestuff in East Asia however, the crop produced less dyestuff than the average crop of indigo, and was quickly surpassed in favour of the more economical Indigofera tinctoria plant. ![]() A common alternative used in the relatively colder subtropical locations such as Japan's Ryukyu Islands and Taiwan is Strobilanthes cusia. The primary commercial indigo species in Asia was true indigo ( Indigofera tinctoria, also known as I. A variety of plants have provided indigo throughout history, but most natural indigo was obtained from those in the genus Indigofera, which are native to the tropics, notably the Indian Subcontinent. ![]() ![]() If Steam disconnection still cause a problem if you join via LAN, start the game directly from the '.\SteamApps\common\Divinity - Original Sin\Shipping\EoCApp.exe' program. All told, the Cotopaxi is not the most high-performance jacket here, but it’s a very versatile pick for everyday wear and a great value at just $150. And if you do choose to test its limits in the backcountry (we did), the Teca Cálido holds up fairly well, with a lightweight and packable build (the jacket stuffs into its chest pocket), relatively durable shell, and gentle elastic bindings on the hem, cuffs, and hood that seal in warmth. You don’t get a breathable, stretchy shell like the TNF Casaval below, and the Cotopaxi certainly doesn’t compete with the Micro Puff (also below) in terms of warmth for weight, but it’s hard to beat for casual use. We tested the Teca Cálido throughout a mild winter, and it became our go-to jacket for daily use. As with most of their offerings, Cotopaxi did something a little different with the Teca Cálido, and we really like the result. ![]() What’s more, it’s reversible, with a solid interior that showcases retro styling and cool dump pockets, reminiscent of puffer jackets of yore. Their Teca Cálido Hooded is case in point: the jacket features a recycled shell, insulation, and lining, and its vibrant color blocking and classy fit and finish make it fun to wear both in the mountains and around town. And a final note: The women’s version of this jacket is simply called the Atom Hoody, but features the same overall design and materials as the men’s Atom LT Hoody. Most of all, we love the versatility: the Atom LT works great as an outer layer or midlayer, and it’s one of the best options on this list for everyday wear. We’ve worn the Atom LT during all kinds of outdoor activities from hiking and biking to cross-country skiing, so how does it compare? The Arc’teryx isn’t quite as breathable as the Casaval and other performance-centric synthetic jackets, but the Coreloft Compact insulation and stretchy fleece side panels still work well for active use. And with its most recent update, Arc’teryx incorporated a more durable face fabric, a longer hem, and improved cuffs, making our favorite synthetic jacket even better. Unlike The North Face's Casaval below that has a softer shell and interior fabric, the Atom is tougher and shows less wear over time. This synthetic jacket absolutely nails the essentials: you get impressive warmth for the weight, supreme comfort, a useful feature set, and a sleek design. What we don’t: Breathability could be better.Īrc’teryx makes some of the top jackets and shells on the market, and the Atom LT Hoody is perhaps their most well-known model. I’m also very satisfied with wind resistance. A softshell jacket is anyway not something you wear for heavy rain (unless unexpected), and in light rain the Houdini jacket has always kept me dry. Maybe not as good as some of my previous softshell jackets but I can’t really count this as a downside due to the extra breathability the Houdini Daybreak offers. Nevertheless, it has blocked the rain efficiently so far. ![]() The thin polyester fabric is extremely good at letting the moisture and warm air escape to the outside, which made me a bit worried if it would consequently provide inferior rain protection. When I started wearing the Houdini softshell jacket for hiking and alpine ascents, I quickly noticed that it provides superb breathability. The jacket is made in Portugal, which means that the workers have been paid and treated fairly. Every component of the jacket is sturdy, yet lightweight. So, all in all I was very satisfied with the materials. I also found the other components of the jacket such as the zippers, drawcords, elastic cuffs etc. (400 grams) which is indeed not a lot for a softshell jacket. Due to the thin fabric, it’s also quite lightweight. When I wore the jacket for the first time, I quickly figured out that it’s very comfortable and provides great freedom of movement. The fabric is softer, stretchier and thinner than any other softshell jacket I’ve had. When I unwrapped the jacket, I was positively surprised by the materials. The fabric is made with a ripstop reinforcing technique which increases the durability of the jacket. I have wanted such a softshell jacket for a long time. When I unpacked the jacket, I was happy to see that the fabric is very thin, soft and flexible. The Houdini Daybreak is a lightweight softshell jacket which is designed for outdoor activities in windy conditions and/or light rain.
